INTRODUCTION

Business English for Impact takes into consideration the needs of Malaysian adults who fall into this category. On top of covering the skills of writing and speaking, it contains the necessary elements of grammar and communication

It is vital for all participants to understand how communication is part and parcel of language. In fact, this knowledge can be used effectively in their working lives. By doing so, they may be able to, amongst others:

  • Increase productivity at work
  • Improve communication within their departments as well as externally
  • Help themselves to improve their own career opportunities in the organization

Grammar components have been included in this program. This is simply because it has been found that lack of knowledge of grammar is why many are unable to construct proper sentences. Some grammar rules are like a formula that can be learned and applied repeatedly. This can be easily taught.

OBJECTIVES

  • To increase confidence in communicating using spoken and written English
  • To learn how to pronounce some common words correctly
  • To improve speaking skills, in terms of being concise, clear and accurate
  • To expand on relevant vocabulary and phrases for different situations
  • To understand the purpose and correct format for emails
  • To learn some basic rules for grammar
  • To learn the importance of the communication process, and how it applies to writing and speaking
  • To identify and learn from common Malaysian errors

Day One (9am - 1pm)

  • Discovering the communication process
  • Examining mediums; benefits and usage (e.g. emails and phone conversations)
  • Barriers to communication

  • Why and when should you write in the business world?
  • Understand your purpose in crafting messages
  • How readers respond to written messages
  • The effects of badly/carelessly written messages on organisations

  • 7 must-have steps leading to effective writing
  • Ways to organise points and elaborate with details
  • The 4-point plan for messages requiring action The effects of badly/carelessly written messages on organisations

  • Using active sentences to maintain interest
  • Explanation of active and passive sentences for simple tenses, continuous tenses and the present perfect tense
  • 7 writing Cs for a professional finish

Day 1 (2pm - 5pm)

  • Email etiquette in today’s world
  • Format that allow for quick grasp of information
  • Tone and writing styles – formal vs informal
  • When to use and not use templates
  • Review of emails to inform, to explain and to persuade
  • Writing and responding to emails, e.g. to obtain information and seek advise
  • Writing action-oriented closings
  • Hands on writing session for different types of emails.

    • Transition words for smooth flow of points in paragraph and between paragraph
    • How sentence length, wordiness and terminology affects reader’s attention span

    Creating clear and impactful headings and subject headings

  • Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives (includes dictionary work)
  • Simple present, past and future tense
  • Continuous tenses
  • Present perfect tense
  • Positive & Negative statements
  • Yes/No Question
  • Active and passive sentences (structure and usage)
