INTRODUCTION

This course provides an opportunity to learn about the Power Electronics circuits and its
applications. Participants will be introduced to various power semiconductor devices for
high power and high switching frequency operations. Four types of energy conversion will
be focused. For each conversion, at least two applications will be discussed with a depth
emphasis on their circuit design and operations.

  • Understand the working principle of power electronics converters and its applications

Day One

  • Various power semiconductor devices, Diode, Thyristors, BJT, MOSFET, IGBT, characteristics,
    I-V Curve, switching techniques, selection criteria

  • Uncontrolled and controlled rectifiers
  • Control voltage circuit design
  • Applications example (Power Supply Unit, DC Motor Controller, etc.), their power and control circuits, operation and design issues.

  • The concept of DC Choppers
  • Design of filter components
  • Application examples (DC Motor Controller, heating circuits, etc.), their power and control circuits, operations and design issues

  • Working Principle of Diode and Thyristor, Rectifier Circuit (With and Without Filter Component)

Day Two

  • The circuit for single and three-phase
  • Choppers
  • Control circuit for firing pulse
  • Application examples (AC Soft Starter, Light Dimmer, Ceiling Fan Speed Controller, etc.), their power and control circuits, operations and design issues

  • The design of single and three-phase inverters
  • Control voltage circuit design
  • Application examples (AC Motor Speed Drives, UPS, Solar power applications, etc.), their power and control circuits, operation and design issues

  • Working Principle of MOSFET, Step Down DC Chopper, AC Chopper
