INTRODUCTION
This is a course intended to provide a comprehensive coverage of substation earthing system design for safety and protection systems. The course provides comprehensive coverage of earthing system design and protection systems. A simplified coverage of the basic principles in earthing design, which involve the measurement and interpretation of soil resistivity, and some simple calculations for the design of earth resistance for the substation are first provided.
It is then followed by the operation of the protection systems which include the operation of protection schemes, such as various circuit breakers and power system protection relays. The issue of what
constitutes to an adequate design of the earthing and protection systems will also be addressed.
